Hi ladies! I know it’s been a while since you’ve heard from us at Living No Lye. We appreciate all of your continued support during our absence. As always, we encourage you to continue to share your experiences on your natural hair journey. So, keep ‘em coming!

Today I wanted to just share my (and Sasha’s) first press. Of course, I went to my favorite natural hair stylist, Dana, with Elliptical Naturals. And as usual, she did not disappoint! Take a look…

This is how I looked when I walked into the salon (I’ve been loving the side puff lately)

Then, Dana started working her magic. First, she washed my hair and conditioned (gotta love that hot towel under the dryer ). This is a picture of Sasha in her full glory! Watch out Foxy Brown…

I tried to snap a picture of the products she used to start the flat-ironing process. Sorry about the glare, but there’s a list after the picture.

Tip #1: Dana said a little bit of the Kay Vel Creme Press protects the hair from humidity. It definitely worked!!

I was very happy with the results. This was my first hard press since being natural (BC’ed Dec 4, 2010). I decided I’m going to get it pressed once a year. I have to say, it completely changed my look. I kept it for a week. It could’ve lasted longer, but I missed my fro!! I started to get a little bored with it straight. Although, I tried some creative styles during that week.

Flat Twistout Fail = Side puff victory!

Hello ladies! So much has been going on in the world this is natural hair since my last post. I’d just like to say congratulations to all of you ladies creating companies, planning successful events and manufacturing great products for all of us. We would love to share your successes with everyone. So, send in pics of your events and we’ll gladly share them…Now, on to business.

I saw sweeteababy0427 on YouTube describing how she parts her hair for a flat twistout. It sounds simple, but she has a way of creating an “L” shaped part so your hair falls the right way. So, I thought I’d give it a try. I washed my hair (using Deva Curl No Poo Conditioning Cleanser…LOVE it), did a pseudo deep conditioning (just put on a shower cap, no heat) and then applied my Giovanni Direct Leave-In Conditioner. Then, I sort of let it air dry a little….and then the fun began! I noticed that it was a little difficult to keep the 2 pieces of the twist separate, but I did my best.

Some pieces are ok, but a lot of the ends are puffy. OMG! What am I gonna do???

Here’s my quick-fix:

Crisis averted! I’m excited, too because I get to wear my favorite hair accessory. It’s a clip that I picked up at H&M in NYC. I wish I had one in every color

What I learned:

1) My hair is too short to put into only a few twists

2) I should keep the ends of my hair wet when I twist to avoid the afro puff at the end of the twist

3) There’s no such thing as a bad hair day when you have natural hair!

Celebrity Stylist Felicia Leatherwood has created styles for Jill Scott, Sanaa Lathan, Will Smith, Terrence Howard, Anthony Anderson and more. Pictures of her most recent ‘big chops’ done on celebrities Kim Coles and Tomiko Fraser Hines have been blasted throughout the blogoshpere.

Along with styling hair, she also conducts hair care workshops for women of color around the world. According to her website Loving Your Hair With Natural Care, “… the workshops are in response to the hundreds of questions she receives from women desperate for answers and guidance about their tresses. Felicia specializes in helping women transition hairstyles and grow healthier hair. These styles range from “get up and go” to the latest trends.”

Felicia Leatherwood took time out from her busy schedule to share with LNL readers her hair story, advice and inspiration behind her workshops.

I’ve pretty much always been natural with the exception of experimenting for a little while with relaxers and weaves.

Why she cut her locs, starting over with a “big chop” …

I cut my locs because it was time and the hair will always let you know when it wants to move on from another hairdo. I wanted to get back to focusing on who I am on the inside without my hair. I started becoming, what I call “Hair Obsessed,” which is when we start making our hair be wrong for how we feel about ourselves.

Her advice for those contemplating wearing their hair natural …

Going Natural is 50/50 – 50% patience/50% confidence. Be patient with transitioning your hair and never ever curse your hair. Rock your hair with the highest of confidence!

On whether or not celebrities recently doing the “big chop” is a fad …

No not a fad, an awakening! Women who have been hiding their hair under weaves and relaxers, etc. are recognizing that they don’t have to do that anymore. More and more women are being accepted and loved as beautiful and sexy, wearing their natural hair, and that’s an inspiration to others.

On whether celebrities who return to chemical straightners feel pressure to do so because of their professions …

Sometimes that plays a roll in the decision and other times, we as women want dramatic changes in our lives and our hair provides a forum for that change. And when you are a celebrity, you have to constantly BRING IT, in order to stay in the media as new and inventive.

On naturals adding color to their hair …

Natural is looking and feeling more of your organic you, using organic products as much as possible for the health of your hair, without altering the texture or pattern of the natural curl. There are plenty of all natural hair dyes that I have used in coloring hair, i.e. – Naturatint and Bigen Henna hair dye.

The inspiration behind her workshops …

While traveling all over the world and seeing that women of color were killing their hair with chemical altering and improper weaving techniques, I started thinking that this type of hair abuse is not just on the outside, but on the inside as well. It all starts with how we feel about ourselves on the inside. The work I do has to do with working from the inside out! This is how we empower each other.

What the future holds …

Sasha’s First Trim!

Ok ladies, it’s been a while since I’ve posted an update on my personal natural hair journey. I’ve been experimenting with styling techniques and products. So, I definitely want to post my review of As I Am curling jelly. Stay tuned…

But for now, I wanted to share some pics and my experience during my first trim as a full-fledged natural! When I was relaxed, I got my trims every 6-7 weeks. But its been 5 months since my BC and I haven’t had one! So, I called Dana Augustine of Elliptical Naturals to get my hair in order. I know she has a lot of experience with natural hair and she was able to calm my (possibly irrational) fear of totally wrecking my curl pattern when straightening. Since its the summertime (and very hot and humid in Atlanta), I had no intentions of leaving it straight. But I wanted to give it a good shaping. So, here’s my experience in a nutshell.

1. My hair was washed, conditioned and I was put under the dryer with a warm wet towel covered with a plastic shower cap.

2. Then, the conditioner was washed out, my hair was sprayed with Jane Carter Leave-in conditioner (I recognize that smell anywhere) and de-tangled using the Tangle Teezer. This was my first experience with the Tangle Teezer and it worked like a charm!

3. Next, Dana blew out my fro on high heat (see pic below)

I absolutely LOVED the blow out. I didn’t think I would, but I loved the body and movement it had….very Foxy Brown

4. Then, after the blowout, Dana lightly flat-ironed my hair using the GHD (Good Hair Day) flat iron. She loves the GHD flat iron because it automatically adjusts its heat setting based on the porosity and texture of your hair. This lessens the risk of heat damage.

5. Next, she trimmed and shaped my hair (see pic below). I love the cute little round shape

6. Then, it was “back to reality” as she put it. Using her famous curl defining technique (and EcoStyler Krystal mixed with a little curl activating gel to reduce the crunch), she whipped my curls right into shape! Here are a couple of pics midway and all done! Oh yeah, after she was finished applying the gel, she told me to shake. I tossed my head back and forth a few times and she said, “No. REALLY shake!” So, I shook my head until I was dizzy. And it really made my curls pop She said this was a way to elongate the curls so that they’re not packed in so tight.

So, that’s it! I had a great experience during my first trim. And Dana made it very painless and fun! I definitely recommend you ladies here in the Atlanta area check her out at www.myhairtexture.com.

JOB INTERVIEW: Curly or Straight?

Ladies, I’m sure you’ve had this dilemma before a job interview- should you wear your hair it its natural state or use the flat iron. Recently, I landed a job interview and couldn’t settle on this decision, so I asked two friends of mine (Tameka, black female; and Colin, white male) for their opinion. They both agreed curly.

“it shouldn’t matter about your hair, only that you are qualified for the position”, says Tameka.

I completely understood what she was saying; however, I was interviewing for a reporting position with in a “white collar” company. I feared my hair would have been too much of a distraction or overwhelming for the interviewer considering me for a serious news job. The way I see it: big-curly hair is fun and outgoing; local news…not so much. My point was clearly proven by my male friend Colin:

“I love your hair when it’s curly, I could play in it all day” , he said.

“Playing in my hair” is definitely not what I want the hiring staff thinking about. I spent hours researching the company, paying costly amounts for printing resumes/cover letters, overnight shipping, and coming up with the perfect answers for any question thrown my way. My hair should not be the main attraction. Although I wanted to leave my hair curly, especially because it takes so long to straighten; I asked one more person before making this decision. My dad. He is traditional, business minded, and very blunt; I will take his advice over anyone else’s, especially since I am a “daddy’s girl.

My dad says, “straight hair is more professional looking”.

Well that settles it, straight it is. Not happy because of the labor I have to do, but if I get the job (crossing my fingers), I could wear my hair however I like. Why is straighter hair considered “professional looking” ? Is it because it gives off the texture of Caucasian hair? Is that the only image Americans think is professional or is it the traditional way of thinking (thanks dad). Michelle Obama should rock her locks in its natural state, maybe that will set the standards for the new professional black female in America. Ironic enough, when the employer saw my demo tape, he mentioned that he liked my hair curly and should show it more often. NEXT INTERVIEW I’M GOING NATURAL!

Do you know your ABC’s? The ABC’s of “Hair Speak” that is. Within the natural hair realm, along with the trials of learning what our hair likes and doesn’t like, there are tons of natural hair tools, ingredients and techniques.

Naturals even have their own lingo – HIF aka hand-in-fro, meaning someone who has the inability of keeping their hands out of their hair. And, Shrinkage or Jumping, referring to natural hair’s magical ability to appear two inches long, but when stretched it’s actually a foot. There are many more terms.

To some it can be a bit overwhelming. Luckily, there are numerous places on the Web, where information is available at our fingertips. One of these places is YouTube. I love YouTube. Amongst the clips of piano playing cats or talking dogs and the latest dance moves, by simply doing a search on natural hair you are exposed to a wealth of information.

There are hundreds of naturals and transitioners with channels that touch on all types of subjects under the natural hair realm. They break down washing, styling and conditioning techniques and share their ‘Big Chop’ videos. One such channel is that of Kimberly Gray’s Journey to My Roots.

In her latest videos Part I and II of The ABC’s of Hair Speak, A Course in Hair Care University, she painstakingly lists ingredients, chemicals, tools, vitamins, natural hair lingo etc., as well as defines each item, explains where it comes from, what it does and its uses.

I say painstakingly because the terms are all listed alphabetically – some alphabets even having more than one term, and the videos are thoroughly detailed. She even gives a chemical breakdown of the Amino Acid Structure, a graph depicting the elements within, as well as a description of their importance to healthy hair.

Another one of my favorites – because I am a chemical nerd - is her detailed explanation of alcohol. She gives the different forms, and states the pros and cons of each. Of course, this is all done to music and with graphics, all time lapsed with plenty of time to read the information provided. At the end of Part II, viewers are awarded with a virtual honorary bachelor’s in “Hair Speak”.

Before There Was … It Was – Nappturality.com

Nappturality.com natural hair community was the first online natural hair site that I discovered when I decided to wear my natural hair. Although there are several online natural hair communities in existence today, Nappturality.com was the pioneer.

It’s a place where you can find photos, hair journals, forums and all types of information about natural hair care. Like-minded natural hair wearers and those that are transitioning share tips, product reviews, how-to photos/videos and more. And the community is still going strong today.

I credit Nappturality.com and its creator for not only keeping me on the path in my goal of maintaining healthy natural hair, but for also turning me into a self-proclaimed ‘Natural Hair Ambassador’. Therefore, I am dedicating my very first piece on LNL to Nappturality.

Patricia Gaines aka ‘Dee’ is the mastermind behind Nappturality.com. Below she took time off of her busy schedule to share with LNL readers her hair story and inspiration behind Nappturality.com.

Dee’s hair story …

My hair journey started in 1998 when a too-strong relaxer broke my hair off badly. I had no choice but to wear a wig, then braids and weaves because of the damage to my hair and scalp.

As I was going through this process, I started to question why I felt I *had* to relax my hair. What was wrong with my hair? I hadn’t seen my natural hair in over 20 years, and as I resisted the temptation to relax it I began to discover feelings of shame and fear about my hair.

I had straightened my hair for so long I didn’t feel like I had any other choice but to wear it straight. When I started to question my feelings and delve into my belief systems, I started to rebel against them and eventually overcame my insecurities permanently, on a deep level. But it took years.

Dee’s advice for those contemplating wearing their natural hair…

I would say that a mental transition is as important if not more important than the physical one. What is going on inside your head needs to be worked on as much as what is going on outside it.

We are conditioned to believe straight hair is easier, more desirable, better, prettier, more manageable and we go to extreme and ridiculous lengths to achieve that look, including using dangerous levels of heat and toxic chemicals which end up destroying the hair. We even avoid certain social activities to ensure our hair doesn’t “revert” to its natural texture.

We do it so much that it becomes so ingrained in us we don’t even know why we do it anymore. We just do. All this has a mental basis and the reasons are sometimes extremely difficult to admit to and overcome.

The inspiration behind Nappturality…

Nappturality came into existence in 2002. I had already gone natural and was searching the internet for 2 years, looking for support and help with my hair type. I found some great communities, but many were geared to “curly” hair and of the Black hair websites, they were more focused on how to straighten it than how to encourage us to stay natural.

When I couldn’t find what I needed, I formed Nappturality and invited my group of natural friends to visit and share their hair tips and photo albums. We decided at that point that it would be a nappy haven. No talk about straightening and no obsessing about hair types.

I had set the website up to be a portal to other areas of the internet which could help us but within a short period of time, our small our group of members grew, and Nappturality became the hub.

Dee on Nappturality’s growth …

I am so proud of the wonderful community that has developed through Nappturality. Its early growth was staggering and I went through many teething problems with servers, hosting companies, overusing my traffic allowances on shared servers, but the membership continued to grow because the focus of the website never changed, and it was and still is, unique on the web.

Members have made the community what it is today. I only supplied the neighborhood and services.

What would she do if there wasn’t a Nappturality?

I can’t imagine my life without Nappturality. We are coming up on 9 years now and it has become an integral part of my life. So I have absolutely no idea what I would be doing but I don’t think I would be enjoying it as much as I do Nappturality.

I mentioned to Dee that when I first joined Nappturality, I felt I was a part of an exclusive natural hair club, because it was one of a kind, and when I started to see other sites emerge I would think – hey they are just copying off of “my community” – lol. Here is how she responded.

I think it’s great to hear you say “my community” – that is what makes Nappturality so special. The members are very protective of her and consider themselves guardians. I just LOVE this!

Every member has a part of Nappturality and I believe this is one of the reasons why the site has been so successful for so many years and is continuing to grow at a phenomenal rate. Very early on, an atmosphere of belonging was cultured and this atmosphere has carried through so strongly over the years. It is amazing.

I asked Dee if she considered herself a ‘pioneer’ in the natural hair community.

Well, there are so many women out there whom I admire, who were natural before me, online before me, have written books, launched products… My contribution was creating a supportive, specific web presence for natural hair. In that regard, Nappturality was the first, exclusively natural haircare website, so yes she would be considered a pioneer.

Nappturality has a life of her own.

Dee’s thoughts on the rise of other natural hair communities…

When I started Napputrality.com, I said that the goal of the site was not to be the richest, biggest, most popular haircare website muscling everyone else out of existence. I still feel that way. There will never be another Nappturality, no matter what other websites pop up.

I am happy to see that the seeds planted by Nappturality has led to developments of spin-off websites and a rise in Black women putting down the caustic chemicals, hot combs and Yaki – and leading lives healthier, with better self esteem and confidence in their natural hair and appearance.

On Nappturality’s uniqueness…

We are the largest website that represents exclusively, natural hair. We do not discuss heat straightening appliances, hair relaxing or any other hair-destroying, texture-altering hair practices.

We don’t agree that the European standard of beauty is one we need to aspire to and we encourage women to flaunt their natural-born texture to its maximum effect. No other website does this as well as Nappturality does.

We also have grown into a community which has branched out from only being about hair, into discussions on health, weight loss, current affairs, education, politics, teen life, parenting, genealogy as well as fun things like sports, pets and travel.

Dee’s thoughts on Nappturality being the inspiration behind its members starting their own natural hair related businesses, books, etc…

I think it’s wonderful. Every time I receive an email from someone who says Nappturality has inspired them to start their own business, I feel wonderful inside. Helping Black women reach their potential and achieve things they never thought possible is something I feel strongly about and I hope more and more sisters embrace their natural talents and turn ideas into careers.

What the future holds for Nappturality …

Nappturality can look forward to a bigger, better website for one!

When asked about having a grand meet-up in her home state of Australia she stated , “ I don’t think we will convene in Australia, but maybe New York in 2012.”

African Pride: My Pride My Way Re-Launch

This past Wednesday we were invited to attend the African Pride product line re-launch held in Atlanta, GA hosted by Toccara and Lance Gross. So, of course we went! It was a beautiful early spring night in Atlanta. So, I was looking forward to it all day. And the people with African Pride and the King Plow Center did not disappoint! At the door, we were greeted by lovely gift bags full of African Pride’s Olive Miracle products. Then, as you walked in, there were stations set up all around the room featuring stylists demonstrating the products in models with beautiful hair (they even had a natural hair station for us curly girls ) and beauty experts giving mini makeovers.

As we walked around the room, we ran into several Atlanta bloggers/vloggers (see pics below) who were there to capture the event, too.

Then, we entered the back room, where the fun began! There was a wine bar and an OMG photo booth set up in the corner. In case you haven’t heard of it (which I hadn’t until Thursday), its a camera set up where you can take pictures holding slogans representing the event. The representative told us we could take as many pictures as we wanted, and we definitely took advantage of that Next, Toccara and Lance said a few words on behalf of African Pride and Dondria Nicole made a special appearance. Then, a panel of experts answered questions about haircare from the audience.

It was an exceptional event and we were honored to be there. So, you know we’ll definitely be sharing the footage with you guys really soon! But until then, I’ll share these pictures with you guys. Enjoy!

Hey, Jasmyn. Can you tell our readers where you’re from and how long you’ve been natural?

Sure! I’m originally from Decatur, Georgia and I’ve been natural for 1 year. I transitioned for 15 months and big chopped in March of 2010.

Congratulations on your Naptural Anniversary We hear you have a favorite product that you can’t live without. Are you willing to share your secret weapon with us?

Of course. It’s not really a secret, but I LOVE Long Aid Curl Activating Gel. It defines my curls really well, makes my hair shiny and doesn’t leave it with that crunchy feeling. Plus, it’s really cheap. I’ve tried other gels, but I always end up coming back to my Long Aid.

You definitely can’t beat the price of Long Aid…So, do you have any advice for the ladies out there on their natural journey?

I guess I’d tell them to stick with it. The road seems harder than it is. The hardest part is transitioning, but once you do the BC, its easy. I actually transitioned twice. I got a relaxer around 10 months the first time. But I’m so glad I saw it through to the end this time. It really is much easier!

My Dream Hair

Have you ever seen someone and thought “I would LOVE to have her hair!” Well, I do it all of the time. Some of the ladies’ hair I know I will never have due to the difference in texture, but hey, can’t a girl dream? But there are a few heads of curls that I would run over a pinky toe for. Don’t get me wrong, I love my hair, but we all have an ultimate goal, length, or fullness that we are striving to get to. I’m a sucker for big hair, so expect to see big, big luscious curls. Here are a few examples of the hair I dream of having. Let’s start with the obvious first:

Tracee Ellis Ross has got to have the most perfect hair I have ever seen in my life! She was one of my inspirations for going natural. When I first watched an episode of Girlfriends, I completely became fixated on Tracee’s hair. Immediately, I thought “I gotta have that hair!” After seeing how beautiful big hair can be on a woman, I knew I my thickness would be alright.

What I love about Tracee is that it seems as if she dresses for her hair. She really works the different styles that she wears right into her outfit. It’s almost like an accessory.

Seems as if Corinne Bailey Rae is doing some sort of twist out to her hair, but whatever she’s doing, I’m all for it!

Marsha Ambrosious has really transformed her look and her new curly style has pulled it all together. I love the color and style she’s been wearing lately.

I know this is not a person, but I had to include this because this wig was bangin’ on the mannequin. You have to admit that it’s fly.

Needless to say, I dream BIG! Who are some of your hair idols?

Sure! I’m a scientist and PhD student who loves taking pictures in my free time. I’m from Atlanta, Georgia and I’ve been natural for about 2 and a half years.

Great! So, you’re a photographer? Do you have a website where people can see some of your work?

We visited your site and you’ve got some great shots. Congrats! So, do you have any favorite hair products that you’ve been using lately?

My favorites these days are Jane Carter Shampoo and Conditioner, Kinky Curly Knot Today as a leave-in conditioner, and DevaCurl One Conditioner.

Awesome! Well, we see your hair is well-conditioned Do you have any advice for the ladies out there who are transitioning or considering going natural?

Going natural was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s versatility at its best! The road may be long and frustrating (and maybe even weight gaining-I didn’t work out too much during the transition), but it’s worth it. Don’t go it alone: find an expert in the transition and surround yourself with supportive folks to help cheer you on!

Jessicurl’s Weekly Deep Treatment

I definitley believe that deep conditioning on a weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly basis is important to having healthy hair. I’m getting back into the groove of doing deep conditions more often. Recently, I’ve decided to give Jessicurl’s Weekly Deep Treatment a try. I really, really like this treatment.

What I love about this treatment is that it’s really creamy, almost like cocoa butter. I applied it after I washed and conditioned my hair. Then I put a plastic shower cap over my hair and sat under the hooded dryer for 20 minutes. My hair felt extermely soft and moisturized without the extra slimey feeling that some other deep conditioners can leave behind. So, I found myself up late googling “Jill Scott + afro” for no particular reason and came across a post by Cassidy of the Natural Selection Blog from July 2010. In the post, she shares some of her favorite celebrity afros, which was interesting to see. But the greatest find was a link to a Tumblr site called Afroholic: a collection of images of the beautiful & unique rounded thickly curled hairdo. Jackpot! If you ever thought an afro was boring or dated, you MUST take a look at this site. It’s arranged by month and showcases some of the most amazing afros I’ve ever seen. I’ll definitely be checking back to see what has been added each month. You should, too! Here are a few examples:

My Curls Have Been Quenched!

Last weekend I attended Fro’ Fashion Week in Atlanta and hosted the Mix & Mingle party. (We had a great time, by the way!) Throughout the weekend there were gift bags being given away and what does a curly girl love more than trying out new products? Trying out FREE new products! CURLS was on-site providing consultations and samples, as well. I’ve always wanted to try this line, but I wasn’t sure if I ever would. So, since I was given the opportunity I decided to try Quenced Curls, their organic moisturizer. OMG!!! My hair has fallen in love with yet another product.

Quenched Curls is a liquid moisturizer that is packaged in a spray bottle. Usually, I don’t care for moisturizers in a spray bottle, it reminds me too much of “jheri curl juice”. This moisturizer contains certified organic ingredients such as White Tea Extract, Chamomille Extract, Pomegranate Seed Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii Shea Butter, Jojoba Seed Oil, and Cocos Nucifera Coconut Oil.

I applied this product after I washed and conditioned my hair (left the conditioner in). Because these were samples, they did not come in a bottle, but in a small, plastic, squeezable tube. I squeezed a pea-sized amount in my hands and applied it to wet hair, section by section. The moisturizer was not sticky at all and glided right onto my hair shaft. I also applied it the next day as a Day 2 refresher.

I must say that this is a great summer time moisturizer because it’s light and doesn’t weigh the hair down. The smell is also delightful! If you get a chance to try out Quenched Curls, by CURLS, let me know how it worked out for you!

Sure. I’ve been natural for 5 months now! I had my BC on September 17, 2010.

Well, congratulations on the BC! Do you have any favorite products that you’ve been using since you’ve been natural?

I haven’t really been using anything too expensive, just water, Ecostyler Olive Oil Gel, Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner, Lustrasilk Shea Butter Cholesterol, olive oil, jojoba oil, and Castile soap.

Sounds good! So, do you have any advice for the ladies out there who already are or are considering going natural?

Listen to your hair! You may not be able to use the same products as others. Educate yourself: buy books, watch videos, get with a group of sisters who will support you. Lastly, have fun! Love on your curls and do you!

‘Fro Fashion Week Product Experiment

Ok ladies, so for those of you who couldn’t attend ‘Fro Fashion Week this past weekend, I’d first like to say you really missed out. There were so many ladies from around the country who came to learn and share! One of the most impressive sights was the “Shopping Arena.” You could find hair and skin products, handmade jewelry, Heutiful steamers and even a V-Bar (a special soap for our most sensitive areas). Well, I got a couple of hair gels to try out on my twa to find a more natural alternative to my Ecostyler + Long Aid combo. I’ll show a couple of pics and let you decide which results you like best.

So what do you think? Section A, B, or C? As far as how each felt, Section A felt a little crisp, Section B less crisp, but firm and Section C was soft. Can’t wait to get your votes. I’ll reveal the winner in a couple of days…

P.S. The style is wash and go with finger coils in the front. That pesky front section refuses to coil on its own.

Stumbled upon Greatness!

You know how you go in a store for ONE THING and leave with 20 items? I’m totally guilty of it. However, I couldn’t be more ecstatic about being distracted easily! Walking through the beauty aisle in Target I came across “Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque”. Instantly my curiosity grew in this order: read the ingredients (which are all readable and organic), opened the jar to sniff (smells yummy), and then…sampled some in my hair!

After buying everything in the store including my new favorite hair product, I forgot the main item that I went in for. Oh well. When I arrived home, I used the “Shea Moisture” in my hair while wet. Immediately, I felt and saw a difference; and within a week my hair looked healthier and stronger. The texture: I would compare to tapioca pudding…almost smells like it too! Seriously, the texture is quite thick and creamy, not greasy or oily, absorbs easily, and gives hair the shine and moisture your hair thirst for.

There is an option of rinsing out the product or leaving it in- I leave it in to control my frizz and curls. Not to mention it repaired my damaged hair and reduced split ends!

Ingredients: deionized water, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), argan oil, cetyl esters, sea kelp extract, panthenol (vitamin b-5), ammonium salt, essential oil blend, avocado oil, lonicera caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower and lonicera japonica (japanese honeysuckle)flower extract, tocopherol (vitamin e), hyssopus officinalis extract, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf and equisetum arvense extract, soybean oil, daucus carota sativa (carrot) seed oil.

The Verdict: ***HIGHLY RECOMMENDED***

Sure. I’m from Lexington, South Carolina and I’ve been natural for seven (almost eight months)!

Cool. So, in the seven months that you’ve been natural, what have been some of your favorite products?

My favorite products right now are Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding, the Cantu Shea Butter line (especially the leave-in conditioner), and Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk.

I sure do. I have learned that patience is truly a virtue in this natural hair journey. Allow your hair to take its “natural” course. Get to know your texture. Find the products that work best for YOUR hair. Remember we are all different. What works for one woman may not work for you. Lastly but most importantly, be confident in whatever stage you are in and don’t be afraid to “strut” (yes, people are watching).

Method to this Madness?

In a recent interview rapper Method Man was asked if he liked women with natural hair to which he responded ” No, I don’t like peasy afros, sorry. I don’t like dreads either. I like a woman to get her hair did.” I was highly offended by his comment. I wasn’t offended because he doesn’t like women with natural hair, because we are all entitled to our preference. I was offended by the terminology he used to describe women with natural hair and the implication that women with natural hair don’t get their hair “did.” People that have this type of mentality continue to add fire to the flame of self hate. Many African American women are already battling with low self esteem and these types of comments do nothing to help. It’s unfortunate that in order to be considered beautiful in this society we must have our hair fried, died, and Europeanized.

I’ll give Method Man a pass for being ignorant, but at some point, he as well as everyone else must take responsibility for their damaging words. The only thing “peasy” is this type of mentality, and until we straighten that out, we will never love ourselves as a people.

So, Bobby. You recently started your Sisterlock journey. What products were you using before and which are you using now?

Well, for now, I’m just using water and spritz. But during the months I was natural before I had my Sisterlocks installed, I was a fan of Carol’s Daughter products.

Can you share with out readers why you decided to take the natural route?

I went natural due to my own desires to embrace my natural hair and my need to be a positive influence on my daughter. I want her to grow up confident and happy with the hair that she has been blessed with!

Do you have any advice out there for anyone who might be reading?

Be yourself and find the reasons you want to be natural. If it is a strong and powerful reason, you will do it and feel confident and passionate about your choice to have a relationship with the natural you!

My First 2 Months Natural and what I named my hair…

Ok. So, it’s not OFFICIALLY 2 months yet (BC’d December 4th). But I didn’t want to wait another week before sharing my experience so far! First of all, I feel ZERO regret. Never felt it from the minute I sat in Michelle’s chair at Urbanbella ’til now. I’m so grateful for that. I recently heard some stories about people who did their big chop and felt horrible afterward. To those people I say, “Keep the faith.” It seems to be that the people who feel that way aren’t sure how to style their hair or which products work best for them. My suggestion is to keep reading, watching and talking with all the other ladies in the natural hair community. That has been a huge help

I figured since I was starting a new relationship with my hair, I might as well know who I’m dealing with along the way. So, there was an unofficial naming ceremony and I’d like to introduce you to…Sasha! So, I’m going to post pics, but before I do, I just wanted to share a few things I learned these first (almost) 2 months.

1. Sasha loves water! This was totally different from transitioning life. Water was the enemy. But now, I can’t start my day without a dose of good old H2O
2. You don’t have to tie your band so tight that your brain is squeezed in order to make a good puff. After a few times of walking around with a terrible headache, I gave up and loosened my knee-high….nothing awful happened. Glad I learned that early before causing breakage and maybe eventual brain damage…lol.
3. The feeling you have when wearing your natural hair after years of relaxers is indescribable. To say it feels great is a massive understatement. I feel more beautiful (I didn’t even have a problem with the way I looked before) and more “me.”
4. Having 10 different bottles of shampoo and conditioner with you in the shower can get complicated. I’m finding myself gravitating toward the same products each time (see my regimen below).

As promised, here is my usual regimen:

shampoo: Miss Jessie’s Creme de la Curl (once a week) and Shea Moisture Curl and Shine (every other week)

Conditioner: Giovanni Deeper Moisture mixed with Jane Carter Solution Replenishing Conditioner (Deep conditioning)

Co-Wash: Nature’s Gate Jojoba Conditioner and Herbal Essences Hello Hydration

Leave-In: Giovanni Direct Leave-In (I don’t think I’ll ever change this one)

Hi, Kenya. Thanks for joining us today. Can you tell all the lovely ladies and gentlemen out there where you’re from and where you’re living now?

I was born and raised in New York. Then, I moved to Valdosta, GA when I was 13, and I’ve lived in Atlanta since April 2010.

Cool. Your hair is looks great. Have you always had natural hair?

No I haven’t. I’ve been natural a little bit less than 2 years now. I had always wore it long, and with bunches of colors until I signed with my first talent agency. It was agreed that me having my hair natural would be most marketable.

It’s refreshing to hear that they recognized that natural beauty is “marketable.” So do you have any must-have products?

To be honest, I don’t really have a favorite product. I’m not really a label brat, I just kind of use what does the job. Although I definitely make sure to stay clear from any product with the usage of petroleum and fragrance in it’s ingredients.

Sounds good. It’s so important to know what works for your hair and what doesn’t. Well, before we go, is there anything that you have to say to the men and women out there?

Yes! Love your natural hair! African Americans are the ONLY race that can grow our hair in a texture like such! Don’t destroy your identity because you don’t feel good enough. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear weaves, wigs, and extensions, that just means you shouldn’t ignore what God gave us! Don’t forget there’s only ONE you – And nobody can compete with that!

Miss Jessie’s BOGO Review

I have been using Miss Jessie’s products for a little over a month now, and as promised I am going to tell you what I think about them. The cost of these products is the major factor that kept me from trying them for so long. Fortunately, I lucked up and caught a BOGO sale and purchased the Rapid Recovery Treatment and Baby Buttercreme which all together set me back $50.

The Rapid Recovery Treatment is a deep conditioner that is meant to give you healthy, strong, well behaved curls. Honestly, this is one of the best deep conditioners that I have used. It is thick and creamy but goes on light and it smells nice. Detangling my hair was a snap with this product. This deep conditioner left my hair soft, strong, and frizz free. I have been using it once a week and I have noticed that my curls stay well behaved for a longer time than they did before. I usually have to co-wash my hair every 3 days to keep my curls looking fresh, but lately I’ve been able to go a whole week with cute curls before I have to revive them.

The Baby Buttercreme is a moisturizing creme that is made to replenish the moisture in your hair. Although, the Baby Buttercreme is not really a styling product, I have been using it as one. The light non greasy formula leaves my hair shiny and well moisturized. This product also makes my curls well defined and bouncy. Overall I am very happy with these two products. I have been using them exclusively and I am very pleased with the results. I would recommend trying these products as they are now sold in smaller more affordable sizes at Target.

I love jojoba, castor, olive and coconut oil. I also love CURLS shampoo and Giovanni Conditioner. (Most times though I make my own products with organic ingredients like cocoa butter, essential oils and such!)

Dry Bantu Knot/Twist Out

I will be the first to say that I’m not very experimental with my hair. Alot of that comes from not knowing what styles to do, will I like it, will it take too long? I run into people all of the time that say “If I had your hair I would do all kinds of things”. Well, I decided to take action and start playing with my texture and length. And I’ll admit, it’s pretty fun!

I’ve always wanted big curls and waves. I thought the only way to achieve this was to do a roller set and lots of heat. I’ve tried roller setting my hair a couple of times and they were epic fails. But I’ve discovered the dry bantu knot/twist out technique, so I thought I’d give it a try. Needless to say…I love it! Here’s how I achieved the look:

Tools Needed: Spray bottle, Curl Creme, Brush

First I started with 4 day old hair. I realized that my hair likes to be styled with this technique on dry hair. I grabbed a section (part and section according to your desired curl size), sprayed a very, very small amount of water and applied a dime size of Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk. I then brush the hair out.

Next, I separate the hair into two strands and twist them together, twirl them around into a knot and tuck under.

Halfway.....

I did not use any pins and my knots stayed secure through the night. I wrapped my hair with a scarf.

All knotted up!

In the morning, I unraveled the knots and separted them to my desired fullness.

Fullness

I pulled back one side just to have cute little style. I also stretched a few spots with a blow dryer.

This style is definitely one I’m going to keep!! Why don’t you give it a try and let me know how it works out for you?

Going Green One Step at A Time

Like many people, you’ve pondered the “What’s your New Year’s resolution?” question over and over again. Maybe you’re still undecided or perhaps, like many others, you’ve decided to live a greener life in the coming New Year. However, you don’t know where to start. When a distance runner prepares for a marathon, she increases her distance one mile at a time, and just like the distant runner, you must take one small step at a time when you’re deciding to live a greener life. The first step might seem a bit uncomfortable because you’re doing something that is not natural to you. But soon enough, you will be stepping with ease and ready to add the next step until you reach your goal. So to help you get started with the first step, I’ve categorized the areas where most people begin in their walk towards a greener life. This will help you safely navigate your way through your ultimate destination- i.e., a healthier mind, body, and spirit.

A green mind entails you to replace negative thoughts with more positive thoughts. The first step towards achieving this is to take itty bitty steps with just one negative thought. For example, if you are constantly filled with self doubt, replace just one of those thoughts with a more positive thought. So if you think that going natural will be difficult to manage, immediately, replace that thought with a more positive thought like, “going natural will be great because first of all, it’s my natural hair, and secondly, I have an amazing support group- complete with videos and product reviews to show me the way. “ It might take you a week or two until you’ve completely accepted that going natural will be a beautiful process. However, eventually you will see that that going natural is as natural as breathing air. Once you’ve conquered the first negative thought, move on to the next thought until you feel that you are basically a very positive person who is in full control of her life. Now that you’re oozing positivity that everyone is taking note of, it’s time to bring your body into the picture-don’t panic-it’s as simple as one-two-three.

With the body, you have many areas to focus on, such as losing weight, buying greener personal care products, or just eating healthier food. Again, start with one area to go green, such as eating healthy. Now eating healthy doesn’t mean that you run to Whole Foods and do a major overhaul in your kitchen. It simply means that you will select one thing, such as eating more fruits instead of cookies and chips. So, every time you want a cookie or chip, just replace it with a fruit. The first two days will be tough, but after day 3, your cravings will drop dramatically, especially if you’ve cut sugar from your diet completely during those first two days. Once you ‘ve mastered incorporating more fruits into your diet, you can move on to adding or deleting another food item and you will be well on your way to a healthier body. So now you’re oozing positivity and your body is starting to feel healthier, it’s time to focus on your spirit.

Feeding your spirit is very similar to feeding your mind and body. You have to feed your soul very green energy. A good place to start is with reading your religious/spiritual doctrine, i.e. the Holy Bible, The Qur’an, or the Hebrew Bible, etc. Next, you can focus on an act of kindness that you would like to incorporate into your life. One great act of kindness is to be kind to people that you would not ordinarily be kind towards. When you come into contact with that person, smile and say hello. Once you see how good it feels to actually make someone else happy (gasp), you will be saying hello to many others in no time.

Now that you see how easy it is to start being a healthier, happier you in 2011 with these three very tiny steps, grab your proverbial sneakers and get on the path towards a greener and ultimately, more healthier you-mentally, physically, and spiritually. Happy New Year to a greener, new you!

2011 Resolutions – Living No Lye Style

So this year I have a few resolutions that I plan to execute throughout 2011. Not start and stop (like I usually do) but continue throughout the year and beyond. Here are my plans.

Hit The Gym! I’ve got to get back in shape.
Drink More Water- 4-8 glasses each day.
Take Multivitamins- This sounds simple but I always forget.
Deep Conditioning Hair Treatments- every two weeks.

I’m not trying to take on anything to drastic, but they make a huge impact on the health of my hair and body. What are your plans? Leave a comment and let us know!!

Christmas Gifting: Yolo’s Natural Whipped Shea Butter Mix

Christmas is almost here!!!!! This year my Christmas gifting has been downsized. I’m saving for my wedding in 2011 so resources are TIGHT! But I still want to give a special meaningful gift to my family. After thinking and stressing out about what I could gift on a low budget I finally got a great idea, my Natural Whipped Shea Butter Mix!!! I have been using shea butter on my skin and hair for years. I mix my shea butter with other natural oils to make it creamy and luxurious! My skin and hair is always so soft and moisturized so I think this will be an amazing low budget gift to those I love.

To make my Natural Whipped Shea Butter Mix you will need:

100% Pure Shea Butter (I used 1x 16oz container)
1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/4 cup Aloe Vera Gel
1 tablespoon Castor Oil
1 tablespoon Tea Tree Oil
1 tablespoon Grape Seed Oil
1 tablespoon Coconut Oil
You can substitute any other natural oils or creams you desire

Directions:

1. Dump the shea butter into a large plastic bowl and soften in a microwave for :45 sec.

2. Next add the remaining ingredients to the softened shea butter.

3. Whip the mixture with a hand mixer or stir with a plastic spoon until ingredients are completely mixed and starts to thicken.

4. Pour into a sealed container.

This shea butter mix is amazing. It’s very light and absorbs into my skin and hair. I hope my family will enjoy it!!

If you have not been introduced to shea butter as an all over moisturizer here is some background on its’ benefits.

Target Stores Have Gone Natural

As a curly girl, there was a time when walking into a retail store to find hair care products was an adventure. Somehow these stores reduced our needs to a small section at the end of one aisle. Then it was off to the beauty supply store, where you seem to just turn right around and walk out the door. If you haven’t noticed by now, Target has developed a section for natural hair in their Health & Beauty section. This is not to be confused with the little “black hair” section off to the side with the combs and brushes. This a complete and separate section conviently placed near the main aisle of the store.

Target stores and Target.com now offer brands such as Miss Jessie’s, CURLS, The Jane Carter Solution, and the Target exclusive SheaMoisture.

“By offering an accessible assortment of salon-quality brands and everyday essentials, Target is the destination for guests’ beauty needs,” said Keri Jones, senior vice president, merchandising, Target. “With the introduction of Miss Jessie’s and other new launches, our guests will now find more of the products they want, need and trust.”

For you Miss Jessie’s fans, don’t expect to get it for less. The prices are the same as if you would buy it online from the products website. Good thing that the price didn’t hike up to pay for convenience. Sheesh!

I’m pretty excited about Target’s expansion into natural hair care. Now I don’t have to go through too many extremes just to find products that are affordable and also work well with my hair.

So the next time you’re in Target make sure you swing by this section and see what products are available to help you with your hair care needs!

Macadamia Natural Oil Product Review

A couple of months ago while visiting my soon to be mother-in-law I was introduced to the Macadamia Natural Oil product line. My soon to be mother-in-law is a hair stylist with her own store where she sells hair products and accessories. Being the natural hair junkie that I am I looked through the selection in the store and came across the Macadamia Natural Oil set. The set included the Rejuvenating Shampoo, the Deep Repair Masque, Nourishing Leave-in Cream, and the Healing Oil Treatment. It looked like something I could use because all the products are sulfate free, color safe, and paraben free! Seeing me side eye the product, (I think I was grilling it lol) my mother-in-law gifted me the entire set and I think she may have changed my life! So lets get in to the product review.

First up…. The Rejuvenating Shampoo!

This shampoo is very gentle and adds moisture back to my hair. It cleans my hair but doesn’t give it a squeaky clean feeling. It has a light clean scent that I love.

Next, the Deep Repair Masque (thunderous applause!!!!!)

This is just what my hair needs this winter season!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff. It is absolutely amazing, no really, it is! It’s thick and creamy and I like to add a little olive oil or any other essential oils to this masque then put my hair in a plastic cap and sit for 15-20 minutes under a hooded dryer. Afterwords my hair feels like Butter! This masque “combines Macadamia & Argan oils with Tea tree oil, chamomile oil, aloe and algae extract” to add moisture back to the hair. It is also a great hair detangler. And sometimes when I’m feeling extra I even detangle with my Macadamia comb. (Yes she gave me the comb too! Loves it lol!) The Macadamia Oil Treatment™ Comb is made using an innovative new process that allows us to blend our Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment directly with a specially formulated resin. The end result is a unique detangling comb that is infused throughout with our special oil.

Now on to the Nourishing Leave-In Cream

My hair eats this stuff. Yes, I said it eats it lol. I apply this to wet freshly washed hair and to revamp dry styles. This leave in cream is very light but very moisturizing. It tames frizz and doesn’t leave residue in my hair. This is a product that I use just about every day.

Last but def not least the Healing Oil Treatment

This is the product that holds this line together. This oil is the truth, ya heard me! I mix it with everything and it never lets me down. I usually mix it with the Deep Repair Masque when deep conditioning and to the Leave in Cream when my hair needs extra moisture. Hot oil treatments are also great when I use this oil! Damp or dry hair it doesn’t matter. This oil is light it doesn’t weight my hair down and it gives me the shine that I’m looking for. I love this oil!

Meet our first Natural Beauty of the Week, Sharmelle Brooks!

This beauty is originally from Wisconsin, but has lived in the Atlanta area for nearly 3 years. Take a look at what she had to say about living naturally.

How long have you been natural and how was your transitioning process?

I have been natural for nearly 11 months. I cut my own hair on January 1, 2010 after 8 months of transitioning with sewn-ins and braids.

Tell the ladies what some of your favorite products are right now:

I have two favorite products. One is Shea Moisture’s Organic Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque. I use this as a leave-in moisturizer, but it can also be used as a deep conditioner. I also love Lush’s Revive and Balance (R&B) Hair Moisturizer. These are the only two products I’ve used that moisturize my hair without leaving a greasy film.

What advice to you have to offer to ladies on their natural hair journey?

Be you! Don’t let anyone make you feel that you have to look a certain way. Create a look for others to follow you.

Natural Hair Makes the Nightly News….and Ratings Soar!

For years, Rochelle Ritchie, an African-American news reporter at WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach, FL, was told that she needed hair extentions to appeal to viewers. She wore extentions for six years and watched her career climb, but her hair was suffering. So she told her boss (a white male) that she wanted to cut her hair off and wear it natural. He had no idea of the process or that it was even an issue. Ritchie decided to document the process and air it on the 11 o’clock news.

News director Jeff Brogan said that the “share” of the audience numbered 11 at 10:45 p.m., rose to 14 from 11 p.m. to 11:15 p.m. and stayed there from 11:15 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The segment aired at 11:15. Check out the video below!

I’m Gonna Miss My Ponytails…

I know its easy to get swept up in the emotion of “going natural.” You start researching what you can do with natural hair, you stay up all hours learning about new products and techniques, and you start trying to convince all of your non-natural friends to join the process with you. Personally, I know I started with the intention of transitioning until my natural hair was long enough to at least put into a ponytail. But as the months pressed on, the urge to just cut it all off kept getting stronger and stronger. Don’t get me wrong, transitioning has been so much fun. I really COULD do it for a lot longer. But I’m so excited to get to know my own hair unencumbered by the relaxed ends. So, after 7.5 months of transitioning, I took the plunge and made my appointment for December 4th at Urbanbella Salon. A good friend of mine (actually, the friend responsible for me embarking on this wonderful journey…thanks Jazi T’s) got her big chop at Urbanbella and said she had a wonderful experience. So, the clock is ticking and the countdown is on!

Everyday I say, “This is the last time I’ll be able to have this updo” or “This is the last time I’ll have my long french braids.” At least for a while, that is. And then it dawned on me, “I think I’m gonna miss my hair.” I really didn’t think I was one of those people who had any sort of attachment to my hair. After all, I had it cut short once before and it grew back. That’s what hair does…it grows back. I think this time is different though. This time its not about just cutting it short. It’s about the growth of the new me…the REAL me. I’m excited and at the same time a little anxious. Sometimes its hard to keep a brave face when friends and family ask, “Aren’t you afraid to cut off all your hair?” Or when some aren’t so diplomatic and just say, “Don’t do it!” But I know I’ll be happy and feel relieved when its all said and done on December 4th. Until then, I’ll have to bid my ponytails and french braids adieu….at least for a while, that is

Shea Moisture Has Stolen My No-Lye Heart

I have discovered a brand of products that my hair is truly in love with. It’s called Shea Moisture. Amongst the natural hair products that Target now carries, Shea Moisture has got to be my “golden find”. Not only did the prices catch my attention ($9.99 for ALL products), but the products are all natural and contain certified organic ingredients. I’m not big on hair jargon, but if my hair likes it…I love it!

I tried four products. The first was Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque:

According to the website,”This rich treatment deeply moisturizes and repairs hair, while providing a protective barrier for the hair from heat and styling aids”. I used this product as a deep treatment after I conditioned my hair. I sat under the dryer for 15 minutes and then rinsed. My hair was really, really soft afterwards.

Coconut & Hisbiscus Hold & Shine Moisture Mist

I’m a little on the fence about this one. Not because I didn’t like what it did for my hair, I don’t believe I’ve figured out how to use it. I was thinking that it’s more like a gloss. It’s supposed to ”impart a high-gloss shine, while providing hold and hydration to hair”. The directions instruct you to spray on towel dried hair or dry hair. Well, I sprayed it on my hair while it was wet, my hair was softer but I couldnt’ tell if it had done it’s job or if that was because of another product. I sprayed it on dry hair and that was an absolute no-go! Since it’s a liquid and not an oil, it made my hair frizz. You know us curly girls cannot spray any type of liquid on our hair and not have it do something funny. I haven’t given up on this product, I just have to find a way to use it.

Coconut & Hibiscus Conditioning Curl & Style Milk

Love this product! This hair milk “detangles, conditions and defines curls while restoring body and shine”. Yep, it did just that. I used it as a “wet hair moisturizer”. I put this on wet hair after I washed out the conditioner or after I did a deep treatment. The shea butter definitely helped with moisturizing.

Coconut & Hisbicus Curl Enhancing Smoothie

My favorite! I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this yummy concoction of curly goodness! ”Our all-natural hair dressing hydrates hair and imparts shine and bounce to curls”. This is how the website describes the product…how modest of them. I use this product after I apply the Curl & Style Milk. It goes on smoothly and gives great definition and shine for days! I’ll be using this for a long time.

Short Hair Maintenance….Long Hair Too!!

Having a great hair style can make you look and feel great…Currently I am sporting the short natural look but caring for short natural hair maybe easier than caring for long natural tresses, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have to care for my hair at all because it still requires maintenance to keep it clean, healthy and looking good!!…While browsing online to search for short hair care I came across a few tips that I found interesting to share (Those sporting long hair may find some tips useful to) some include:
**Trim your hair when it is needed..Note: short hair tends to grow out of the given style quicker than long hair styles (I can truly attest to that)
** Condition your hair: using conditioner is part of the hair care process that helps to keep the hair soft and silky, and the common natural hair conditioner is a good Hot Oil Treatment
**Exercise more often: the more healthy you, the better your hair will look
** Eat better: Just think of the saying ” You are what you eat,” therefore what you eat can affect your hair condition…drink plenty of water and include fruits/vegetables in your everyday meals
..I particularly find the eating and exercing tips interesting because when we think of hair care we generally tend to think of the best products to use for our hair.
..As I found these tips helpful/useful..I hope these are some you can use too!!!!

One Big Detour

Can I just say that over the years, my image has taken one heck of a detour? Sheesh. Just thinking about it almost gives me whiplash. Granted, it’s rare that anyone maintains the same personality, likes or dislikes, etcetera, etcetera – especially through the years between high school and 30. Still, if you’d told me back in 1994 that I’d be anything like I am now, I’d have told you that you’re effin nuts.

I guess the first thing that went was my hair. As steadfast as I’ve become about it, the funny thing is that it all happened by accident.

When I first moved to Atlanta, I had a whole host of things to adjust to: the roads, the speeds, being the new girl in town. As most women can relate, I also had to find a new hairdresser. The search was daunting. I didn’t know where to start. I’d ask women I knew from work where they got their hair done, but more often than not, it was at a price I wasn’t willing to pay. 100 Some dollars for hair? There are people starving. Are you kidding me?

Well, I needed to do something. My new growth couldn’t hide under the relaxed portion of my hair. I looked like I was wearing a helmet. So I found an African shop and got my hair braided until I could find a permanent stylist. A school year later, I was taking them out, only to find that my hair had matted at the joints of the braids. I panicked. My mane locked together like protesters. And though I tried to comb it, brush it, and pick at it for the longest, hell no, it wasn’t going anywhere

A friend of mine who’d been rocking an afro for a couple of years introduced me to her coif manager. The woman took one look at me and said, “Oh. You need a hair cut.” I was mortified. I’d never been without my hair. Or, really the more accurate thing to say is I’d never been without my hair permed. In the months that I had braids, I accumulated about three inches of new growth, so it wasn’t like I’d have been bald. I’d just never seen myself without chemically altered hair, which at that time, was about the same thing as being bald……….(READ MORE)

How to do a Straw Set

I’ve never been courageous enough to do my own straw set (it seems like it would take hours), but I love them when I see people rocking them. It’s also a great style for transitioners because it blends the two textures very well.

Thanks to the wonderful people at Treasured Locks, I found some pretty simple instructions for a straw set.

You will need:

A pack of plastic drinking straws(For slightly larger and looser curls, use small perm rods- available at many beauty supply stores)
End papers
Bobby pins
Black Earth Crinkles & Curls or other setting lotion (make sure it’s alcohol free)
Light hair oil

Step 1: Shampoo and condition your hair and blot dry with a towel.
Step 2: Part your hair into 1/4 to 1/2 inch sections
Step 3: Place end papers on to ends of your hair.
Step 4: Roll your hair onto the straws or perm rods and secure it with a hair pin.
Step 5: Repeat steps 2-4 until you have finished your entire head.
Step 6: Dry your hair under a hooded dryer.
Step 7: Gently remove the straws and separate the curls.
Step 8: Spray with a light oil and continue to spray with oil on a daily basis.

So that’s it! Tell us your tips or tricks for a straw set that will make it turn out flawlessly!

Tress Talk: Uptown Curl Event

The lovely ladies of Tress Talk held an event at Keka’s Hair Boutique featuring creative updos for the holiday season (I can’t believe Thanksgiving is 2 weeks away already!). They gave away lots of curly girl treats as raffle prizes (Can’t wait to try out my Nourish Conditioner ) and kept the evening interesting with a “Guess that Curly Girl” trivia game. Do you know which celebrity curly girl was born in Ireland and whose songs have been featured on network television (scroll down for the answer)?

The highlight of the evening began when the ladies described how they created the stunning updos on their hair models. From their descriptions, it seems pretty easy to create instant glamour. I’ll have to test out one and let you know how it goes Hopefully, its not a tragedy…Then, they awarded Lyneice Williams with the complete Design Essentials natural line for the best natural updo for her innovative “elegant mohawk” style. Then, as luck would have it, her sister LaRae won for the best loc’d updo. I guess being fly just runs in the family

TWA Styling Ideas!

Well, since my own BC is right around the corner, I’ve been looking for some creative ways to style my hair. Since I’ve been transitioning for 7 months, I’ll probably end up with a not so TWA-TWA (which brings up another question…when is your TWA no longer a TWA?). So, I’m afraid I’ll end up with that in between length that requires more than just jumping out of the shower and putting on some fabulous earrings. I came across this great video on YouTube by Tikisha Thomas, founder and chief editor of NaturalStyle360.com. Looks like she lives in the Atlanta area. Atlanta Naturals Meetup featuring Dana Augustine

Hold on to your seats, ladies! Prepare to be amazed I went to the Atlanta Naturals Meetup event on November 6 with stylist, Dana Augustine demonstrating how to define our curls. I figured I had seen all there was to see on the matter, but she really opened my eyes. I, like many other ladies in the room, thought that you had to have “certain type of hair” to get defined curls. But she made a believer out of me…she showed on her model with very kinky hair that you can (with the right techniques) gain excellent definition. She even pulled a couple of ladies from the audience as a challenge. They, too were amazed at her results. So, what is so special about her method you ask? Well, it seems simple. Just apply water, leave in conditioner, add gel and comb through with a fine-toothed comb. I suppose she’s found the perfect combination of products to make it all snap together. I’m not going to give away ALL her secrets, but I will say that she swears by the Jane Carter Solution Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner.

Take a look below for a summary of her “Curl Training Regimen.” The idea is that if you do it often enough, your curls will start to cling to one another on their own over time.

Shampoo the hair with low lather shampoo

Condition with conditioner of your choice

Dry the hair with a micro fiber towel

Apply leave-in and generous amount of gel product (she used Ecostyler)

Maintain curls each morning starting with damp hands

Ovation Cell Therapy: Week 1

So, as you know, I’ve started using Ovation Cell Therapy one week ago. I heard about this product on the radio. The personality was sayin how her hair grew two inches in the matter of almost two months. On average, I would get about 4 inches a year. If her could grow that fast, I’m assuming I can double my growth (if it works likes that).

Last Saturday, the FedEx box containing my 12 oz. bottle of Ovation arrived. I felt like a kid on Christmas Day! I was a little nervous about the size of the bottle, as I am with most products, because I tend to have to use a lot of product and I didn’t want it to go so fast. So I took extra pre-caution as to not use too much of this, but only what was needed.

I washed my hair as normal with my favorite shampoo, Creme of Nature (I’m old school with the shampoo). Next, I conditioned it with Infusium Moisture Replenisher Conditioner….by the way, I love this conditioner to pieces! After I rinsed out the conditioner, I got out of the shower and parted my hair in four sections and applied Ovation directly to my scalp throughout the four sections and also brushed it through my hair. Because I’m looking for those immediate results the website was referred to, I left it in overnight and washed it out in the morning. I washed my hair again a few days later and left it in until that Saturday. My hair has been styled in a bun and a ponytail the whole week.

Needless to say, I didn’t go to sleep Brandi and wake up Rapunzel. I didn’t notice any growth and I didn’t expect to see any after one week, but there were a few noticable changes in my hair, at least noticable to me. First of all, after just one week my hair was thicker and in a very good way. When I first heard about the product, my main concern was that my hair was going to be so thick it would resemble a pillow. But the good thing is that…it doesn’t. It’s not hard to comb through or just thick at the roots, it’s just a little fuller. Most times I have to really fluff my hair out to make it big, which would mess with my curls and give me frizz. So when it’s fuller, I can just have nice big curls and waves without having to manipulate them too much. The second change came in texture. My hair is softer and feels silkier. It’s not too soft where I can’t hold a curl or there’s major frizz. It rained majority of the days last week and my ponytail did not frizz.

Since my main goals is to obtain length, I’ll udpate you guys every other week. I’m sure I should see change after a few weeks. Until then, I’ll just keep hope alive.

My hair…at this very moment…is in two strand twists and bantu knots. I just washed it for the taping of the first episode of Living No Lye that I along with Brittany will be filming tomorrow!!!!! This is my go to style and frankly I’m so tired if it. Lord I need a new hairstyle LOL!!! Although I always get compliments, its time for a change. I am so thankful that I’m working on this show because I need hair assistance. As my hair slowing dries, and I desperately hope it will be dry before I leave for the studio tomorrow, I reach out to you to help me with a new style. Watch the first episode, check out my mane, and let me know what products or styles you think will work for me. I am open to any and all suggestions…. trust me. Ovation Cell Therapy- Hair growth

Lately, I’ve been having issues with my hair. It’s lacked a little luster, thickness (don’t be shocked), and growing ability. Believe it not, my hair used to be longer and fuller than it is now. I heard about Ovation Cell Therapy and how it helps to strengthen and grow your hair. According to their website “OVATION Cell Therapy nourishes your hair and scalp with essential amino acids”. As soon as I heard that, my ears perked up! Not exactly sure what that means either, but since it’s not chemical based, why not give it a shot? I’m really looking to get back to the length I once had and even beyond (I’m greedy). So, I’ll keep you posted on my hair growth….or non-growth, we’ll see!

This is the length I achieved 3 years after the big chop. But it broke off and was damaged, due to my neglect (I’ll post about that later). It’s the length I want to get back to and actually pass.

Organic Makeup for African American Women

When searching for natural/organic alternatives for my makeup, I came across this site: www.christopherdrummond.com. It caught my attention because Mr. Drummond made claims that he had found a way to eliminate the “ashy” effect of most mineral makeup for African American women. Then, when cruising his website, I found some interesting information about the ingredients he uses:

“We do not have any known potential carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, sensitizers, mutagens, reproductive toxicants, developmental toxicants and neurotoxicants in our products…The cosmetics industry sells products filled with toxic chemicals – many of which are banned from food. The simple fact is that our skin is the largest organ of the human body and what we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put into it.”

I thought about that last statement for a minute. That DOES make sense. As a pharmacist, I know that topical medications are absorbed into our bodies through our skin. So, why wouldn’t makeup? I’m almost ashamed to say that I have NEVER looked at the ingredients of my makeup. This site also has a listing of all the ingredients for his products. That’s refreshing to see.

Mr. Drummond is multi-cultural himself. So, that gives me a little confidence that he knows how to deal with African American skin. He is also a former model/actor who is familiar with the frustrations of using mainstream cosmetic products available today.

So my question is, has anyone used his products? If so, what was your experience? If not, have you found any other mineral makeup products that match your skintone well?
